Australian to US Shoe Size Conversion

Dear Shoe Lady,
I am about to purchase shoes but just want to confirm size conversions. I am Australian wearing size 7.5 to 8 dependent on style. I believe I am a US 8, but its the width I need to check on. I believe I am a C width shoe here in Australia.. which I believe is a wider fit….can you advise.
Thank you
Dee

Dear Dee,
I am so glad you came to us for help! Actually, an Australian women’s size 7.5 is equivalent to a US size 9, while the size 8 is a US size 9.5.

With width, a “C” would be considered a Wide or “W” size. Likewise, narrow is “AA”, Average is “B”, and Extra Wide is “E”. If you take the widest part of your foot (usually the balls of your feet), and measure length-wise, a US size 9 or 9.5 is about 4 1/16 to 4 1/8 inches. I would advise trying a US size 9W. You may be going up a half size because the medium/average width is just too snug.

I thought I would spotlight a couple new arrivals, in different styles, all sized 9W. First up is a style from Aerosoles, a brand know for comfort, true fit and style. The Aerosoles Plum Tree Tan Patent has a 3 inch wedge heel which is helpful for those women who want height and stability. I adore the pattern on the heel.

Wider Width Feet

Dear Shoe Lady,
I was so excited to find your website as the only shoes that fit my feet are thong sandals.

I have measured my feet as your site describes, and the measurements are as follows:
Length 24.5cm
Width 11.75cm
Please can you tell me what size I am?

Kind regards,
Michelle (Australia)

Hi Michelle,
We LOVE our Aussies! With a length of 24.5CM your size would be an 8.5 which equates to 26.4CM.

Your shoe width however, is a bit tricky. An 8.5WW measures 11.1cm. You width is 11.75cm so I am afraid an 8.5WW will be too snug. I would suggest trying an 8.5WWW. The downside with tripe wide widths is the styles are very limited.

Another option would be to try a 9WW and play around with the use of insoles. Also be selective in choosing shoes with soft, stretchable material to accommodate your wider width feet. Here is a nice 9WW size option –

How to Measure Your Feet

Dear Shoe Lady,
My feet have gotten wider as I have aged and have a bunion on left foot. As well lost a considerable amount of weight of the last two years. Not sure what I size I actually wear now. How do I measure my feet?

Dear Linda from Dallas,
Congratulations on your weight loss and keeping it off for over 2 years! With weight loss comes a reduction in the width of your foot and at times even the length. Good idea to measure again at your new svelte weight! Here is a how to guide and the full guide plus size chart can be found by clicking here.

Step 1) Trace your barefoot on a piece of paper. Place weight on the larger foot. Hold a pencil straight up and trace a line around your foot (keep the line as tight as possible to your foot).

Step 2) Measure two perpendicular lines: one straight across the widest part of the foot, the other a straight (not diagonal) line from the toe to the heel.

Foot Measurement Guide

Foot Measurement Guide

Keep these two dimensions: Ball WIDTH and heel to toe LENGTH, on hand when you ask us about a shoe. Also, you must consider the shape of your feet. Thickness (muscularity), thinness, hammer toes, bunions and other shape features should be considered as you look at the size, width and shape of the shoe.

For bunion-proof shoes, you likely are looking for kitten heels, and shoes make of softer material. The Annie Geneva Brown Velvet Suede shoes are the perfect material for bunions.

On the other hand, if you want to keep the same footwear without sacrificing heel height, may I recommend the Aerosoles Tapestry Red Patent heel give that va-va-voom look without forcing you to walk home barefoot!

Happy Holidays and please let us know the results of your measurements Linda!

Heels Slip Out While Dancing

Dear Shoe Lady,
About 15 years ago I bought a pair of easy spirit shoes that fit me better than any shoes I have ever had. I believe they were labeled something like M A/B but I don’t remember exactly. I am a size 7 and 1/2 but the ball of my foot is wide and the heel is narrow and my arch is high. My feet look great in most shoes but I like to dance and have trouble with fitting my high arch and wide ball into a pair of 7 and 1/2 heels so I have to buy an 8 and then my heel slips out. Dangerous while dancing! Help! What size should I look for?
M

Dear M,
Please measure the length and width of your foot. Compare the data to our size chart. – http://www.designershoes.com/size-chart. Most likely you are a 7.5 wide (W) if an 8 is too big and a 7.5 too narrow width wise. The acronyms for shoe width can be confusing so below I will provide a break down.

SS = AAAA = “extra slim” or “quad”, the narrowest size generally available. Even these widths are increasingly rare.
S = AAA= “slim” or “triple”
AA = N = “narrow” or “double A”
M = B = “medium”, the most common or “average” width for that size.
W = C or D = “wide”
WW = EE or EEE = “extra wide”

Don’t fret over wearing a wide size. The majority of women do not have a medium width even though the manufacturers would like us all to believe. I selected a couple of sexy heels perfect for dancing the night away in size 7.5 wide.

Wide vs. Extra Wide Width

Dear Shoe Lady,
How do you know what size to order wide vs. extra wide?

Dear Maddie,
Thank you so much for your question! To achieve the most comfortable and accurate width fit you MUST measure the width of your feet. Women do not believe the width measurement is an important one but they couldn’t be more wrong! Think about the difference in inches between a wide and extra wide width. It’s 0.4 inches. Imagine having to cram your toes into a shoe that is a half an inch too small. Painful!

The benefits of taking the time to measure your width will help prevent toe crowding, bunions, blisters and long painful nights are the dance floor. Not to mention heel slippage. Use our handy size chart to compare your width data then start shopping for comfortable shoes!

I wanted to spotlight an extra wide classic black pump ON SALE for $39.94. Marked down from $81.00.

My Big Feet

Dear Shoe Lady,
I would like to say thank you for sharing your knowledge! I wear a 13 in mens, 14 1/2 in sandals and a 16 in heels! Im so lost. I can find shoes but they are always tooooo high or tooo big. Im afraid of falling. I would like some heels that I dont have to hold on my hand all night. Thank you for your time.

Dear Brandy,
Never fear- the Shoe Lady is here to help! I would highly recommend measuring the length and width of your feet in either centimeters or inches then comparing your measurements to our helpful shoe size conversion chart. If you are a 13 in mens then you would be a size 14.5 in women’s shoes. You should not be wearing a size 16 in women’s heels!

Your next preidciment is most vendors do not make a women’s size 14.5. Shameful I know. But you could try a women’s size 15 narrow or a size 15. That would open up your selection of shoes. Half sizes are almost impossible to find once you are greater than a size 12 so always keep that in mind.

Here are some size 15 high heel shoes you’re sure to turn heads while saving your feet!

Women’s Shoe Size Question

Dear Shoe Lady, The length of my foot is 26.5 cm and the width is 10.5 cm.
What is my correct shoe size? I have never been able to find a perfect fit.

Hi Katerina,
Our shoe size chart is a great jumping off point for shoe sizing. Based on your measurements, it appears that you could fit into a 10.5w to 11w comfortably. You want to make sure that you don’t wear widths that are more or less than 0.635cm (1/4”). You don’t want any slippage or pinching with your shoes. You always want to remember that the styles and manufacturing of a shoe will make a difference in the final fit. A ballet flat versus a padded sneaker might require a reduction or increase in the size you wear.

Shoe Size Conversion Chart – Australia

Dear Shoe Lady,
I need your help. The size of my foot is 28.5cm from toe to heel and 11cm across my foot. I think im a size 12 by my calculations but just double checking with you as I live in Australia and would like to try and get it right first time.
Thanks heaps hope to hear from you soon,
Julie

Hi Julie,
Thank you for your inquiry! We strive to do our best in matching the right fit. At times it might be difficult to find the exact fit due to each individual’s unique feet paired with standard shoe size manufacturing. The style and shape of the shoe also adds another layer to your search. It is great that you measured your feet. It looks like the best overall fit would be a size 14 medium. I used our shoe size conversion chart to double check your size.

Do you wear a size 12 in Australia? The US sizes and Australian sizes are virtually the same. It doesn’t hurt to measure each foot again, and remember you should be barefoot and standing up when you make the tracing.

Dear Shoe Lady,
I have a pair of Naturalizer wide shaft boots with the size 8 on them (In Australia) is this the same size I order for Naturalizer wide shaft boots from you? I’m looking at the brown array.

Depending on the style and manufacturer, shoes tend to have slight variations. A good place to start is with our size chart, which is in both centimeters and inches.
